“A mind of moderate capacity which closely pursues one study must infallibly arrive at great proficiency in that study.”
― Mary Shelley, Frankenstein
Humans are known to be cognitive misers, conserving mental resources wherever feasible, particularly when confronted with tasks that aren't considered "vital to our existence." In other words, we put off studying until the last minute because we know the work will be difficult and require a lot of mental energy, yet we're not in enough emotional agony until the possibility of actually failing the exam exists. Furthermore, when your brain predicts numerous "painful" outcomes (the pain of studying vs. the agony of failing out of college), you feel stuck, unable to choose the lesser of two evils, and put off the work even longer. Whether you believe it or not, there are forces working against you, moving you away from starting early enough to learn new material comfortably.
WHY?
You may be able to reduce the number of hours you spend studying by learning excellent study techniques, leaving more time for other things in your life. Your ability to learn and retain information can be improved with good study techniques. Students who employ excellent study techniques may feel that their time and effort are more valued.
